From body of work which was responding to the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing. What began as speculation into why we haven’t been back to the moon, transformed into an overwhelming astonishment of what they achieved. With this work I want people to have a closer look at what they did. My visual response focuses on the spiritual journey of the astronauts upon leaving the Earth's atmosphere. What would that do to your soul and mind? I would feel an overwhelming feeling of insignificance if I ever got to look back at the earth as a living spinning sphere. Apollo 8’s mission of circumnavigating the moon for the first time was the first time we had a photograph of the our entire planet. The earth had never been seen before from space. It was the image that helped launch the environmental movement of the late 1960’s. Seeing that image made people think of all of us together rather than separate nationalities, it gave people hope seeing the earth as this incredible sphere of blue and green. The works on paper are a combination of NASA images and my photographs from the South Coast of Wellington, where the rocks remind me of a lunar surface. The artworks start off as enhanced photographs take by me of the South Coast of Wellington, which are then passed through many filters in photoshop and then mixed in with the Nasa images on top.

Sheyne Tuffery is a Wellington based Visual Artist who uses a range of art forms to facilitate his visions of Pacific urbanisation. Sheyne received a Bachelor of Visual Arts from AUT in 1995 and his Masters of Fine Arts (honours) in 2000 from The University of Auckland. He is perhaps best known for the dynamic style of his themed woodblock prints of South Pacific Architecture and the Ornithology of Aotearoa .Tuffery describes himself as a paper architect who uses his work to create and represent his own cultural context and sense of belonging. “My art started from the non-identity of my mixed heritage background (Palangi/ Samoan) to evolve into a surrealist vision of South Pacific Patterns, structures, symbols and paper architecture.” His new work explores the fragility of Earth's ecosystems to investigate whether there is spirituality in science.
