"Hello Jesus. I imagine you here this very social year. Would you say yes to starring in a jocks ad? Give them a derriere view with a side-long glance? GQ would love U on their cover with your 2+billion following but I doubt you'd have an instagram account. Or you might. U were strategic, subversive. Hang with me & they'll shoot us bonding for Bonds*." __ Pop-culture satire by Magdalene Carmen starring herself. This artist's 'Hello Jesus' poem was first published in The Australian Weekend Review, Oct 2020. This is a Limited Edition, signed & numbered A1-size work (59.4 x 84.1cm). Comes as museum-grade giclee prints in Hahnemuhle William Turner matt fine art textured mould-paper, 100% cotton, 310gsm. Vibrant prints, striking depth, unique tactile feel and painterly three-dimensional effect. (What you see here digitally is nothing compared to this artwork's printed presence.) Abstract, bold signature merging dream & street grit, fine art x industrial pop aesthetics, sensitive with provocative signification. Urban-architectural & Woman (self-portraits) are primary subjects. Media = digital photography, graphics, visual effects including the generative, advertising codes, English lingo, her body language. __ Magdalene Carmen introduced first works from her Limited Edition 'Addict' flag-collage series in a teaser, pop-arty film screening at ‘The Body Language 2022’ in Venice, Italy & the London Contemporary Art Fair. The 'Addict' series, once completed, will comprise 12-32 works (or possibly be ongoing) on the eternal subject of the corporeal-spiritual, conscious-unconscious tug of war defining the human condition. And then also its articulation of female power in literal form & metaphor. __ In 2020 Magdalene Carmen was among just six visual artists with tandem artworks selected for Australia's inaugural billboard art show cheekily running between commercial advertising on two iconic billboards across Flinders Street Station, 'demonstrating the dynamic relationship between contemporary art & urban street culture'. In 2021 the show was adapted for the Big Screen at Federation Square. __ First works from her 'Urban Mesh' (Limited Edition) & 'Sign-Offs' (Open Edition) series comprised Magdalene Carmen's first solo exhibition in Melbourne in mid-2018. Magdalene Carmen regularly exhibits at Melbourne's Centre for Contemporary Photography National Salon Shows celebrating contemporary Australian practice. Ongoing work include further indie projects for Melbourne's Fed Square space & participation in international exhibitions. Besides visual artist, Magdalene is also published poet & indie recording artist. Her formal education has been creative writing + journalism, photography + fashion design.
