The urban landscape, the city and the house is a resonant topic that permeates the psychology and imagination of Australian society and culture. The artist Stephen Nova explores themes of the built environment combining creative archaeology and imaginative architecture to present new visions of the urban spaces we live in through his paintings and drawings. Stephen renders the elements of private and public spaces to modify the very fabric of places, allowing for new interpretations of cultural and local history that shape our urban identity.

Australia
I am a full time artist currently living and working in Australia. An important aspect of my early development as an artist which includes my fine art degree, was undertaking the course in Museum Studies at Edith Cowan University in Perth Western Australia. The training and discourse has continued to inform and contextualize the development and direction of my work. In 2014 I participated in an artist residency with Sincresis D’A Spazio D’Arte located in the city of Empoli, Italy. The practice led research focused on the education of the architectonic and artistic heritage of the city. Working with the residency program and in association with the MuVe Museo Del Vetro my work explored the themes, Art, Society and Transformation which provided the framework for my project to investigate questions and key concepts of the ‘architectural imaginary’ as a vehicle to interact and interpret culturally important industrial sites in the area. I have since continued to work with different art and cultural institutions such as the Brighton Historical Society as part of my recent residency with the Bayside City Council in Melbourne, Australia with the aim of exploring how my creative practice and in particular architectural imaging in contemporary painting and drawing has the capacity to engage public space and generate questions and interpretations of cultural and urban identity and how the ‘house’ acts both as a site and metaphor for the imagination in contemporary society.
