This painting concept was influenced by the Japanese Gyotaku art style but with a twist. Instead of using flexible shoji paper with acrylic paints to grasp the simple outline and basic details of the fish. Colby managed to imprint the freshwater walleyes on 100% cotton heavy weight triple primed canvas with commercial grade spray paint. Not only providing a unique display of each fish imprinted but also the textures from each scales, fins and even the squishy eyeball details that give character to the artworks' fishy appeal. This fish imprint featuring walleyes was the very first attempt of this art form by Colby. Even the flawed areas show uniqueness yet humbling connection to the difficulty of creating this art. The walleyes used in this artwork were harvested during Wisconsin's ice fishing season and after art was made, they were cleaned and cooked for dinner. Which means this art is the last remains of what those walleyes may have looked like. A mixed reality of past, present and future imagination for all to view from.
