I used traditional etchings as the base for my new geometric collages. I drew a geometric lattice pattern on the reverse of the print and hand cut shapes to reveal an intricate pathway across the landscape print. The 'cut-out' remains a single sheet and is simply the top layer of the collage, with acid free, coloured paper working in harmony behind. Inspired by Indian 'Jali' lattice screens and windows, I have sought to create collages that move between different planes. I want the eye to move between the pictorial plane of the print and the more abstract pattern behind. Up close, the individual elements and details from the etching can be seen and linked by following the pathways. From a distance, the whole piece can seem more abstract, with the different tones creating a play of light across the surface of the collage. I have recently finished studying printmaking at the Faculdade das Belas Artes in Porto and am drawn to the way detailed etchings can pull the viewer into an image while creating a more unified image from a distance. The work currently comes unframed and can be sent via reinforced cardboard folders. I have show the prints framed in my studio to give an idea of how the final work would look in situ.

The latest series, I am working on, involves using recycled leather cut-offs from the shoe making industry here in Portugal. The range of colours and surface finishes available creates a unique palette to work from. Each individual piece is cut using a "cookie cutter" knife, made from a hand-drawn template. My work has always explored the different layers and patterns behind everyday reality. Everything is a construction of different parts and elements. The visual world has underlying structures and patterns that combine to give us our perceived reality. My art seeks to reflect the connections and layering. A lot of my work involves creating collage. The act of cutting through a sheet of material reveals a window into another layer below. My work tries to create a sense of surface pattern, letting the eye roam over the picture plane, as well as creating a sense of depth and of space receding behind the surface.
