In a future world that has adapted to client change, what will cities look like? In creating this image I imagined one possibility: lots of autonomous vehicles perfectly parked, awaiting passengers, combined with large, featureless buildings housing masses of people living on a universal basic income. You may see something else in the image. The circuit board I used for this image is from the early '90s and was used for fibre-optic transmission. The photo was taken with a Hasselblad medium format camera. I created the illusion of an aerial view of a city by removing most of the text from the integrated circuits in post, and altering the hue of the board to look more like asphalt. The resulting image reminded me of a parking lot. The 32x40" version of this image was exhibited at the City of Ottawa's Corridor 45|75 Gallery. The 17x22" version of this image was printed on high-end Hahnemühle archival paper and comes with a certificate of authenticity.

Christopher Schmitt is a lens-based artist residing in Ottawa, on unceded Anishinaabe territory. His work explores disruptive technologies and the impact they have on the networks of our minds, and on our land. Schmitt’s work examines the idea that perhaps this dark side is not a mirror reflection of our society, but rather a new world entirely. His work helps viewers navigate between abstraction and reality, providing visual clues to this uncertain virtual landscape. Schmitt was the recipient of a City of Ottawa Creation and Production Grant in 2022, an Ontario Arts Council Exhibition Assistance Grant in 2023. His photographs have been published in PhotoEd (Spring/Summer 2022, Winter 2023), Do It For the Grain, Ottawa Private Art Label (OPAL), and have been purchased by the City of Ottawa.
