"Interlude" bridges time and space, melding Boston's MBTA subway system (right) and Chicago's Metra rail line on the left. A lone passenger waits at the intersection of the two cities, holding a Magritte-like umbrella. Light trails along the track represent the energy left behind by the last crowd that boarded a train. The fog and drizzle contribute to the sense of as-yet unrealized possibilities that pique the imagination and stimulate creativity. Next stop--Boston, Chicago, or somewhere else? (Photo-based abstract composite image.)

Steve Bennett is a Cambridge, Massachusetts-based visual artist. He began taking photographs more than 40 years ago, in the age of film, and transitioned to digital photography in the late 1990s. Today, in addition to taking and making traditional street, macro, and landscape photographs, he creates photo-based abstract composites designed to launch viewers into virtual realms of imagination — both his and theirs. Steve’s traditional photography includes candid street photographs, “unintentional” still-life compositions, detailed close up images of natural and human-made subjects barely discernable or invisible to the human eye, and expansive landscapes that inspire a sense of the sublime. The reaction he hopes to inspire in viewers: “Ah.” Steve’s “world reimagined” work consists of photo-based abstracts and composites transformed through digital tools and techniques. He often combine architectural, infrastructure, and technological images with human and natural elements. The resulting work is an invitation to explore alternative realities filled with mystery, suspense, and surprise as viewers navigate between “what is” and “what if” and between the predictable and unpredictable. The desired reaction: “Aha.” Steve’s work has been shown in solo exhibits as well as juried and member events sponsored by art organizations and galleries. It has also been on display at prestigious technology, biotech, and financial services firms.
