Matera is a fascinating city located in the southern region of Italy, specifically in Basilicata. It is renowned for its unique and ancient cave dwellings, known as "Sassi di Matera" or "the Stones of Matera." These cave dwellings are believed to be some of the first human settlements in Italy, dating back thousands of years. The city's historical centre is a UNESCO World Heritage site, attracting visitors worldwide to marvel at its exceptional architecture and cultural significance. The city's charm lies in its buildings carved directly into the rocky landscape, creating a captivating blend of natural beauty and human ingenuity. The view of Matera is truly remarkable, especially from the vantage points that allow you to see the city's intricate labyrinth of stone structures cascading down the hillsides. As the sunlight touches the golden limestone, it creates a warm and mesmerizing ambience, enhancing the city's unique allure.

Dublin born and raised, photographer Steven Doyle chose his first camera at the age of 14. In some ways, it’s more appropriate to say that the camera chose him. This is because Steven’s camera works as an extension of himself. He uses its lens as a third eye to gaze upon and uncover the essential essence of his subject, always finding that subject’s intrinsic beauty, yet always respecting its truth. Steven’s confident and assured management of his camera lens can instantly be seen from a rapid review of his work. One of his chief interests is to create an exclusive focus on people and to capture the nuance of their facial expressions. Steven lived for a number of years between London, Milan, Rome and Eastern Europe. During his time in Europe, Steven began to develop a variety of different styles of portraiture. Steven stresses that the “The photographer brings to his work his own individual photographic style and passion. These things, combined with a devoted and compassionate attention to his subject, produce results that can be little less than revelations.” “I shoot a person in such a way as to allow them both to see themselves as the world sees them, and also in such a way as to let them see themselves at their best. I tend to concentrate on facial expressions to reveal the subject’s inherent sensuality and sensitivity.| I see myself chiefly as a portrait photographer.” Steven has exhibited in Dublin and in Bucharest, and has recently been invited to exhibit in Milan and London. He has an extensive work portfolio. This ranges widely from the world of high fashion to gritty photo journalism; in that latter respect, his photographic record of the lives of the street children of Bucharest and the ravages on them of the HIV/AIDS epidemic are eloquent illustrations of some of his darker and unflinching themes. On an entirely different level, in the realm of popular culture, Steven has produced fashion portraits for top Irish designer Claire Garvey, for drag stars like Panti, Bunny ,Veda Beau Reeves, Shirley Temple Bar, Lady Portia de Monte, and for singing stars such as model, singer, actress Grace Jones, Erica Gimpel (alias Coco Hernandez from the TV series The Kids from Fame) , singer songwriter Suzanne Vega, and Irish jazz and blues singer Mary Coughlan.
