The works have been influenced by an almost instinctual response to color/space both in the material of substance (interrelationships of pigment, media, and substrate), but also in the indication of space definition. They originate in an intuitive color scenario that is articulated by later found structural geometric forms that serve as space definers in one sense, and harken to architectural forms in another – punctuating movements in color sonority. Structures may be found or refined that are more geometric in nature and serve as a form of order amidst non-order. At the same time, the essential reminder of the touch of the hand in zen-like one-off strokes lends a sense of purposiveness to even the un-ordered passages that simply arrive through process. Improvisation is paramount. The process yields opportunities for pentimenti in transparent or transclucent passages in combination with dense opaque portions. The overall state of the piece seeks a sense of animation of elements in one sort of conjunction or another that is similar to a "setting" in musical composition. Born in San Francisco, and raised in Buffalo, NY. Also lived in Seattle, WA, Lexington, VA, and various places in Taiwan where I gained a deep appreciation for Eastern thought and forms.
