Shilpa Sushil is a Los Angeles based contemporary artist. Born to a family of artists in India, she was introduced to the world of art at a very young age. She has been trained and mentored by several professional artists and experimented with different media over the years. It was her love for making things that led her to the field of building spaces. She received her Bachelor’s in Architecture from Jawaharlal Nehru Architecture & Fine Arts University (JNAFAU, India) and Masters in Emerging Systems, Technology & Media from Southern California Institute Of Architecture (SCI-Arc, Los Angeles). Having been in the architectural design industry for over a decade, she developed a strong sensibility for contemporary art that defines and sometimes ties together the spaces she designs. She believes that art and architecture together has the power of transforming a space to create a truly evocative impact on the viewer/user. In her work, she celebrates the exuberance in natural landscapes. She has always been intrigued by the process of formation, layering, accumulation and weathering of natural surfaces with the passage of time, which also has a parallel in the techniques she adopts. Some are natural and some with human intervention. These internal images captured in mind at a microscale, find expression through her abstract artwork. Some of the notable artists who has had significant influence in her art thinking are Mark Bradford, Gerhard Richter and Mark Rothko. She believes in the principle of reductionism in her abstract expressions and how these reduced images connect more directly to viewers with curiosity or in ways that manifest heightened responses and create an immersive experience. The creative journey is complete by the spectator through his/her experience.
