Since I was a little I loved nature . Before I wanted to be an artist I wanted to be a biologist, I wanted to work with animals study them in their natural habitat. A year before I left Cuba when I was 14 my mother enrolled me in an art school and from that moment on the magic of being able to create changed my life forever. Nature has been my source of inspiration from the beginning, it has a primordial grip of my soul. Although my exposure to it has been limited since my entire life I have lived in cities where nature is manicured and planed. This limited experience with nature and what I have learned beyond the cities which has been in a synthetic way, consuming it through books, television, the internet. I have fallen in love with it and when I venture out I am a tourist in it , a tourist in nature. When I want to be in contact with nature society gives me the options of natural history museum, a botanical gardens a walk in the park a zoo and aquarium. I am a human from the Anthropocene. Like fire, water, and wind, we humans are a force that shapes the earth. My work is about nature after humans; nature after our deliberate attempts to shape it; nature as utopian fantasy or at the brink of apocalypse. But my work is also dreamy and poetic where is hard to explain it's coherence with familiar rules. They fallow the logic of dreams and have the gravity of the moon. My fantasies are a biodiversity of hybrid creatures, decadence, and humor. My brain rifles through past experiences, images I have seen, stories I have heard, flavors and aromas I have tasted and smelled, books I have read, dreams I have had. Like a jazz musician I improvise and create worlds out of my swirling memories. Like Dr. Frankenstein, I combine and create my own creatures. My methods are varied and my sources have no limits. From film to cooking, from science to superstition. I feel like a cultural cannibal, a sponge absorbing everything from Disney to shrunken heads from the Amazon rainforest. The alternate universe of cartoons fascinates me, where many rules are broken and reality is reinterpreted: animals can talk, limbs can stretch like chewing gum, flesh can melt like chocolate, aliens take shape, super strength, bizarre abilities, anything and everything is possible. I create dreamy landscapes, poetic relationships and fantastic zoologies.
