In many of these works, there is a repeating theme of curves and semi-circular shapes which I see as abstract portraits; the collective human experience in motion, navigating the world and its current challenges, fears and ambitions. This became a focus in my earlier works during Covid. I feel it is relevant to document this, a sort of abstract journalist, writing stories about the human struggle that can only be felt and not read. As a self-taught abstract painter and professional graphic designer for more than 25 years, I combine traditional graphic design principles with more uncommon painting processes to create a unique abstract voice. "One of my biggest influences was my grandfather Marcel, who was a golf shoe maker at Footjoy in Brockton, Massachusetts for thirty years. He could build anything with his hands. His old blue collar wood shop behind his house in Winter Park, Florida, inspired me to work in a fully organic process using basic construction materials such as latex house paint and spray paint. I feel that it is also important to be involved in every aspect of the artwork, starting with the construction process of the homemade frames, stretching house painter's drip cloths as my canvas material and finishing most of the artwork with simple white pine decorative framing." I work in Latex, spray paint and acrylic, oil markers, pencil, as well as other mediums on canvas and fiberboard. The paint application is usually with scraps of cut framing wood and plastic scraps and rarely with brushes. Since moving to Lagos, Portugal in 2024, I have been creating unframed works. ............................ Eric Guenette was born in Winter Park, Florida (1967) and grew up in Haymarket, Virginia as well as Boca Raton, Boynton Beach and Palm Beach Gardens, Florida until moving to Albuquerque in 2009. He currently resides in Lagos, Portugal as of 2025 with his wife of 21 years.
