José Agustin Andreu was born in Mexico City, of Puerto Rican parents and was raised in Puerto Rico, Spain, France and the United States. Self-supporting since 16, he financed his education by drawing portraits at amusement parks and working in the graphic design field. Jose Andreu has a BFA from Virginia Commonwealth University and a MFA from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He has exhibited in the United States, Mexico, Cuba, and Spain and currently teaches painting and drawing at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and 2D design at Columbia College Chicago. His work documents the morphology of identity. It uses structures that reflect abstract ideas about space, form, and illusion as well as color and light.
