I am an Architect, living and working in Hong Kong. I draw and paint using Architecture as a starting point. This allows me to explore architectural ideas free of the necessary limits imposed by 'real' projects. I am interested in improvisation and intuition as the basis of image making and most of the time this is how I start a piece. As lines and colours are added, an image begins to 'emerge' and a level of control is loosely applied, steering toward the final image. These images veer between imagined settings for architecture to quasi abstract patterns. I like a balance of opposites - the random ink drips and slabs of colour applied with a palette knife, against the precise lines of pen and grid of the gum paper which is applied in strips to a plywood substrate. I am inspired by the cities I have visited and lived in, and also a lot of science fiction, art and music I pick up along the way. Themes which seem to repeat; dynamic equilibrium, future relics, verge of collapse / transformation, space colonization, urban density, unseen connections, blood / energy, sci fi meanderings.
