ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Calligraphy is usually the center of an Illumination. This does not necessarily mean it has to be placed in the middle, but it indicates the content / theme. In the old days, usually many artists have worked on an artwork: papermakers, primers, those who decorate the fringes, artists who are specialized in ornamentation, in certain areas of miniatures, or even in construction. (Today one artist has to master all these skills at the same time ...) In this artwork I first wrote the calligraphy very many times. Finally, I was able to transfer the resulting form onto the paper that was prepared for the illumination, which then inspired me to the surrounding structures. For all circular structures, a partial area is first designed. This also has to be drawn very many times anew, until all structures are positioned correctly and the length and width have reached the desired relationship to each other. Thereafter this segment is reflected so many times that it finally results in a round shape.

The painting technique of these Illuminations comes from the painting school of the Top Kapi Palace in Istanbul and from the private seminar of Prof. Dr. Süheyl Ünver. Each work begins with a design, a drawing that is constructed with compass and ruler and has to be transferred to the prepared paper. Then 22ct gold is painted with a brush on all designated surfaces, afterwards the colors. Each one is contoured black, so the work unfolds from the center gradually like a rising flower. I am focussing on traditional bookpainting and miniaturepainting since 2004 with Illuminations and by teaching in courses and workshops.
