Waiting Print

I wanted to paint something in an attempt to convey that feeling of reflection we sometimes get while lonely, that sort of interior place we become aware of. For me, I often find myself in that place when I'm alone on a walk at night (a favorite hobby!). And it seems even more pronounced as the holidays approach, as nights get longer, as snow falls. But I also wanted to capture a tension-- the figure is alone (and clearly cold), waiting. But the painting itself is not particularly cold. Indeed, I've often found night to be "warm" in a safe, secure sense. So I wanted the character, as alone and small as he was, to seem enveloped in the dark. Finally, I wanted to capture that sense of questioning that we often feel while in that "lonely" place. What is the man waiting for? Why is he standing there alone? Where is he? Who is he? Is someone coming? How did he end up here? Perhaps in looking at this figure, we will ask ourselves some of these questions.
