Jan Parsons is a contemporary artist with a keen interest in the natural world. From her home city of Liverpool Jan has taken her understanding of the contrasting extremes of the wild, rambling landscape, and the post-industrial grit of the north of England, to Yorkshire where she now lives and works. She often travels back to the coast and draws inspiration from the dramatic weather and fleeting moods of the sea. Her work captures the impact of light and how it dramatically alters a scene; how different times of day and the changing seasons impact on a landscape. Jan focusses on the light, colour and composition of a scene, as the sky and weather change; allowing her work to reflect the transience, atmosphere and temperament of the landscape. When painting Jan tends to use a combination of opaque layers of acrylic paint and thin washes of colour to build up a work of art. She describes her compositions as emerging -a mixture of what is remembered and what is imagined. Ultimately her artwork becomes an expression of a journey, experience, or mood rather than simply what has been observed.
