Selene was carved from Moroccan Selenite, a crystallized form of gypsum. Despite the name, selenite does not contain a significant amount of selenium; the similarity comes from both substances being named after the ancient Greek goddess of the Moon. This piece is a very straightforward Mobius strip, having only one surface and one edge in the classing Mobius shape. This mathematical shape was discovered in 1858 by German mathematician and astronomer August Ferdinand Mobius.
