ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This work reflects the current threat of plastic garbage being dumped into the ocean everyday. Based on the fact that plastic objects were found in sea creatures’ stomachs; there could be another frightening consequence that the plants absorb water which contains broken plastic particles. Here, it resulted into the malformed plastic-seeds of a red-pepper. This work is created by multiple mediums on a silk stretched across a wooden frame. In the traditional Vietnamese silk painting, the loose weaving of the silk allows artists to design a transparent effect of the entire composition. Hence, it usually matches with ink, watercolor, or gouache which flexibly affects to the opacity of the image. Nonetheless, by employing oil paint applied on the backside of the painting, the weaving texture of the silk is molded by these pasty pigments, and resulted in its own structure on the front side. Deconstructing the conventional fragile surface, I expect that my methodology may enable the silk painting to be inclusively appreciated by even the visually impaired people via their tactile sensation.

A Vietnamese independent visual artist based in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. My career started off as a commercial designer after I accomplished a major in Industrial Arts/Ceramic Art in Vietnam in 2005. After a period of postgraduate study in Japan (2011-2017), I returned to Vietnam and established my atelier. My practice is evolving towards the physical characteristics of visual and tactile sensation through the properties of materials. My works are expanded from ceramics to mixed-media surfaces. With an expectation of being able to extensively propose an art appreciation to even the visually impaired people, I considers the integration of tactile interpretation onto my visual artworks as an ‘inclusiveness’; and it is channeling my study into an investigation of the relationship between the ‘inclusive’ and the ‘exclusive’ aspect within a context of contemporary society.
