ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Researching painting your Artist discovered distressing aspects of Chaplin's early life. A drunken, abusive father. Who abandoned Chaplin, brother and mother. Mother forced into prostitution. Her contracting Syphilis (clients Gentlemen, not) and her subsequent mental deterioration. Chaplin and brother placed in forbidding orphanages. When he became a successful film-star he did not forget his early years. And looked after those who needed it. Including a most kind heart, supportive to his mother. A real Gentleman. These days, in contrast, many successful Artists (noticeable in this country and polity) come from very comfortable, and or hereditary, and or high-class backgrounds. This is common to their enablers, industries and helpers also. A sort of self-helping coterie. Though, of course, championing causes (press agency), virtue-signalling, and similarly profiting thereby, as slickly and purposely as any institution or corporation, etc.. Hence this artist's portrayal of rags to riches humble Chaplin. One of his early film shorts (30 mins.) called "A Dog's Life" reflected his biography. Dogs in those days and before were certainly not pampered pooches. They lived short lives outdoors, living on scraps, etc.. This painting based upon a black and white still from that short film. Way back when; black and white motion-picture film did not have resolution of today. Hence high contrast make-up etc.. No colour stills found. Colour of eyes is probably correct. But Chaplin's "tramp" wore bowler hats of various colours in various colour stills. Other colours in this painting are also surmised.
