The idea of Warhol’s entire artistic output distilled right down to three small 64 x64 pixel thumbnails of Jackie Kennedy, Liz Taylor and an Electric Chair became the inspiration for these doomed and dripping celebrity portraits. Why are they crying ? “Its an illustration of the heartbreak and sadness we have all experienced in relationships in the past.” Marilyn had a recurring dream.She dreamed that she was in church or some holy place and she was naked. She heard God’s voice telling her, “You are beautiful naked and there is nothing to be ashamed of. Being naked is natural and you are blessed in the house of the Lord.” In order to understand the meaning of this recurring dream, we have to know something about Marilyn’s background. The dream harked back to an incident in her childhood. She was six years old and playing doctor with her four-year-old “brother.” They were sitting in the backyard naked. At that point her foster mother caught them, and she yanked her son away and yelled at Marilyn, blaming her entirely for the incident. Her foster mother was a believer of a fundamentalist religion. She called Marilyn a sinner, a devil, a slut and many other names. Marilyn’s brother was the mother’s real son, while Marilyn’s real mother had abandoned her at an early age and put into a foster home. The incident was quite traumatic for Marilyn and was a turning point in her life.
