Combining optical drawing and painting, I am interested in creating a way of ‘seeing’ without seeing. Look closely at the image and before you know it you'll be seeing invisible owls circling around the sleeping figure. I begin each painting using india ink drawn on gessoed panel to create pulsations and rhythms taken from optical imagery and design. These elements are then encased within a more realistic figurative painting and act as a challenge to perception. They create the illusion of invisibility, so that the viewer can see through and question an otherwise established reality. The result is not so much an alternative fact as it is the desire for a fact. I want to challenge you to a wrestling match with your illusion of certainty, to pin you down with something that might not even be there. This image is painted on a masonite panel with a two inch select pine backing. It does not need a frame.

Yaron Dotan is a Los Angeles-based artist who works in a variety of media and styles to produce optical drawings, narrative paintings, portraiture and video art. Having only ever seen out of one eye, Dotan has used what would otherwise be a hindrance to heighten his creativity. Through a body of optical paintings that combine realistic imagery with rhythmic lines inspired by optical design, he poses questions about the nature of perception, illusion, invisibility, and certainty. Yaron's animated video art piece SACRIFICE won Best Experimental Film 2017 at the Venice Fine Arts Film Festival and has been performed to by dancers at the Taiwan National Museum of Fine Art. In California he has shown at bG Gallery, LACDA, LAMAG, the Coachella Valley Art Center, the Manhattan Beach Art Center, Gallery 825, Trunk Gallery, Art Share LA, Surrogate Gallery Projects and CSU Northridge Art Gallery. In addition to these venues he has shown at the Jerusalem Biennale. In New York Dotan’s work has shown at Art in Flux Harlem and SPACEWOMb.
