ABOUT THE ARTWORK
Going back to my love for the wild west, I wanted to capture an older ranch hand taking a break with his pipe. After a long day of work, this rugged looking man lights up his favorite pipe tobacco blend and ponders quietly. The pipe offers limitless opportunities for inward reflection on ones life. The silent solitude of this ranch hand speaks for itself; old, experienced, and full of concrete life advice. I wanted to focus on the contrast of this piece; dialing in on the shadows. I made sure that the line work was fast and purposeful. Similarly to my other portraits, the figure is slightly caricaturized. The proportions are not exact if you look closely, but that what makes this style unique. With these types of illustrations, I do not typically prep any pencil work prior to the pen and ink. Going head first into the portrait forces full concentration and attentiveness to each line placed on the paper.

I enjoy drawing and painting just about everything from landscapes to people. My strongest focus includes portraits and of people. I love to capture characters that are unique individuals, each with their own backstory. My inspiration comes from a range of artists of the Golden Era of Illustration, branching to the 1960s. My recent work pulls aspects from the vintage advertisements and the characters that inhabit them. I am captivated by the stylization and the world in which they live. I have also spent a majority of my life in the outdoors, whether it be camping, hiking, or fishing. I combine my experiences and love of the past into my illustrations; seen through fishermen, outdoorsmen, and dapper gentlemen.
