ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Although I work figuratively I enjoy exploring the emotional impact of colour and line distortion when working with the human figure. I am interested by all great modern painters and admire the abstract expressionist movement. This painting presented a rare opportunity to paint a beautiful black pregnant model. I chose to paint bright colours and primitive shapes in the background to give the painting a powerful tribal vibe. You can see this primitive influence in the way I have painted the hands too.The bright colours are also symbolic of the celebration of new life. Finally, all my new paintings come with a hidden animal, this one has a tiny scorpion hidden in the jungle.

My Artist Statement Human behaviour in the west contributes to global warming & destroys the natural environment. The production of plastics & consumption of fossil fuels & animal consumption, hunting & experimentation all contribute to a sickening human legacy. My paintings use colour to evoke emotional responses in the viewer. Others may also feature birth and/or death themes. In particular, my depiction of the female nude reminds us of our own mortality. Naked, is how we arrive, and depart this world regardless of our earthly possessions. My Artist Practice My central practice is life painting in which I have studied the human figure for over 30 years. I develop life studies into final paintings in my studio; changing the composition & adding context to explore a theme or particular idea in a painting. When I combine the figurative with the abstract within the same painting I will use colour washes to unify the compositional elements. Colour is my chosen means of emotional expression.
