ABOUT THE ARTWORK
Island Maps presents 8 paintings reproducing images of face profiles weaved in a mirage of forms. Spreading over a field of color, lines painted by hand flow as an allegory to art-historical timelessness, like that of early markings on limestone or marbel—modern hiroglyphics, about self, partners, relationships and physiological portraits of desire, ego, myth and love. This work is about connection and dis-conection, both experienced within our human psyche and our relationships with ourselves and others, both physically—near or far—and emotionally—distant and close. What lies between are approximations to intimacy, interdepence, understanding sexuality and love.

Luis Zavala Tapia is an artist born in Mexico and raised in Los Angeles. He graduated from the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) with an MFA in Fine Art in 2007 and earned and BFA in painting from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2004. He has exhibited at Self-Help Graphics, Vincent Price Museum and the Museum of Latin American Arts. He currently lives and works in Long Beach, CA. Zavala’s art practice focuses on ways to celebrate representation through the use of form and color with a focus in art history. Inspired by ancient art, the tropics, shapes and colors from his childhood home in Guanajuato, Mexíco, Zavala creates work that repositions an emphasis on the importance of being seen as our own selves in a world where many feel unseen or misrepresented as a way to encourage ways of healing and attaining self-autonomy.
