ABOUT THE ARTWORK

The ink features portraits of Pope Francis, Prince Charles, Queen Elizabeth, Claus Schwarb and Bill Gates. In pastel are oriental cartoon characters from lost paintings I did around 2007. When you search online to find out what it means to label someone a 'rat' there are various answers. One opinion was rats are vermin, the lowest of the low and 'spread disease'. Another says a rat is usually a term for someone sneaky, conniving, a liar, it could also mean a traitor!

Jonathan's art commonly employs multi layered imagery within the composition. The artist uses text, often drawn onto and defacing the depicted image. Imaginative play is a significant component of the work, he was influenced by Picasso's technique of "unlearning", emulating childlike drawings. The theme is typically characterized by this sense of unlearning and rejecting the coercion and conformity within popular culture.
