BJ BROEKHUIZEN (b.1979,Cape Town, South Africa) "‘A mask is suggested to confront the indignity and oppression suffered on a daily basis in an unjust society” Broekhuizen signature is his bold use of colour, inspired by his African background. He works mostly in oil on canvas and indian ink on paper. His most usual suspects are mysterious and intriguing portraits with a mixture of abstraction. Also his art is many times provocative, and suggest visceral emotions related with identity, beauty, masculinity and cultures. "Being an artist is about putting something into your subject matter that isn't inherently there. You are not at the mercy of your subject matter, it's the content, and what you put into it, what you do with it, what extract from it, and what you put it with, that is so exciting. If you are aware of this, then you begin to build on the content of your whole life. He has been featured in international press including Harper's Bazaar Australia (Oct 2016) Fresh Paint magazine (2016) ,Flaunt magazine (2015), Sang Bleu magazine (2012); Mascular magazine (2012, 2015).WinterSummerHomme magazine January 2017.Bj Broekhuizen lives and work in London, UK
