This set of 10 green/blue oil paintings incorporating pencil marks made directly onto Polaroid snaps were the start of my major series City Skies London. It started with these in 2012 and the project is still ongoing, now numbering over 400 images in total. The idea was and is simple: when did you last look up at the sky? we all spend too much time looking down at smart phones or our shoes on the pavement to see the sky above us. I make it my job as an artist to do the opposite. I walk in city backstreets looking (and pointing my old polaroid camera) up at the shape of the sky framed between the high-rise buildings. Back in my studio I later work over and reimagine city blocks in flat slabs of paint and scrambling pencil lines incised through the wet paint, barely basing my image on what was in the snap. I am a painter who takes bad polaroids intentionally in order to make something strikingly beautiful out of them. I took the Polaroids that lie beneath, obliterated with oil paint, while walking between the neighbourhood in which I lived (adjacent to the Olympic stadium, in post-industrial land near Stratford, by the River Lea, Hackney Wick and Fish Island) and work in my Bethnal Green studio, in East London. This pilot set had me thinking I was maybe onto something. I later ditched the bucolic landscape colour palette but ran with the concept to develop my highly-original, beautiful series City Skies London. Now I am working on a Berlin series too, and planning Glasgow, Hong Kong and Sydney.

Sarah Kudirka (nee Davenport) is an award-winning contemporary British artist who makes art about the shapes and edges of things: buildings, cities, objects and words. An artist producing striking and mature work, she brings both passion and playfulness to her work. Sarah's paintings are made by using oil paint and pencil applied directly over Polaroid shots that she has taken while walking through cities. The idea is simple: walk and look up at the sky in between the buildings. The resulting art is compelling. She reimagines the city streets and skyline in paint and pencil on Polaroid scale, never copying the photo obliterated beneath. Her series 'City Skies London' now numbers over 400 images and they are available both unframed and in exquisitely framed grids. Just a couple have been enlarged and are offered as limited edition prints. Sarah is now also working on series about Berlin, Glasgow, Hong Kong and Sydney. The artist is inspired by all sorts of stuff to do with material culture; street furniture; the built environment; urban landscape; design; language and architecture. Characteristically lo-tech and handmade in aesthetic, Sarah Kudirka's work is regarded as technically-innovative, accessible and beautiful.
