ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This drawing is part of the series "Understanding the Relative Importance of Things". In my currently work, I am researching the spatial possibilities of drawing - in two-dimensional space (drawing) and three-dimensional space (sculpture / object). My interest is especially in the line, as a structuring element of the image and as the defining unit of network patterns (through its repetition). Along with these ideas, I use the concepts; of emptiness and complementarity, to construct and objectify my images. Particularly in the case of the two-dimensional space (drawing) I am interested in exploring the line (and the pattern) through the use of perspective, since this geometric expedient creates the illusion and confuses the senses, causing a distortion in the perception of reality. The structuring of my projects, part of the creation of fictional series, where I combine Drawings and Sculptures / Objects. In them I gather images of different perceptions (figurative / abstract, organic / geometric, macro / micro), in order to relate the different universes (their complexity and their similarity).

I am born in Lisbon in 1960 and I live and work in Palmela. My academic formation, was decisive for my work as a visual artist, once it gave me a better understanding of Space and its mutation in Time, as well as the desire for exploration and experimentation of new materials, I started to make exhibitions as a painter in 96. Over the years, I developed my work through visual and written research on contemporary art. In 2011, I abandoned painting, and I started to investigate human perception of visual elements, within the transparent bi dimensional supports. Now I'm looking for their relationship in sculpture. The main influences in my work, come from observation of nature ( mainly the human nature), the reading of philosophical authors, and a special friendship, with the painter Fernando Calhau. This association of factors in conjunction with intuition and experience, has transforme my first contents of work, in poetic thoughts of philosophical nature, formalize more and more in the sum of many subtractions.
