Steven taught Art and Design in Scottish Further Education colleges for over 25 years. In that time he experimented with many different techniques, mediums and styles, refining his skills to produce many commissioned portraits for private clients throughout the world. Steven started experimenting with the layering of his work and the inclusion of collage and photo montage a few years ago as he wanted his art works to be more than just 'simple portraits'. He wanted each piece he created to really tell the story of the person’s life. Many of his new portrait works are created at quite a large scale and take many hours to complete, as every single image in his complex and colourful backgrounds is cut out and pieced together by hand. And, because of this, it can take up to six months to complete a large piece of work. In his portraits Steven uses a wide variety of mediums including pencil, colour pencil, fine-line pen, graphic marker, acrylic paint, inks and cut and layered paper. He is influenced by music, movies, sports, advertising, graphic novels and the Pop Art masters. Steven exhibits smaller portrait work at Subversion Gallery in Glasgow's stylish west end and you can see more of his work at
