Julie Masterotn founded Australia's Mobile Light Colour Centre that explores light and colour in the Australian Landscape. The studio uses sculpture and photography to explore optical phenomena and patternation found through light and line in landscape – considering its significance as a contemporary cultural material. The work often results in vibrant optical pattern sculptures and photography. The physical sensation of the artworks are drawn from effects found on the eye through squinting, staring, afterimages, imprints left on vision effected by looking directly into light, and the movement of line in the landscape. Masterton’s photographic practice explores formations and patternation effects of rocks & waves that she refers to as skins. Often using chromatic techniques of identifiable hues or by selecting achromatic colors (black, white or grey) to heighten the viewer’s visual awareness of pattern over image. In doing so, her work appears to flicker, pulsate and move, encouraging the viewer’s visual tension or engaging a slight flickering effect.
