Nature is the real religion. Like walking through cathedrals. Actually, these are the real cathedrals. I think I’ve been shooting nature theses past few years because they lack everything that is wrong with humanity. No matter how crazy, dangerous, “ugly” or “beautiful”, nature is perfect. Even it’s reaction to humanity’s disrespect is perfect. It is what it is, and it knows. Walking through Cumberland was in some ways opposite from Antarctica. Lush, green, “populated” (by plants and wildlife), growing. The synergy between all of the living things’ is amazing. The way trees react and adapt to each other and their surroundings. Nature adapts to its surroundings to survive. There’s a cycle for the ecosystem to work. Humans adapt their surroundings to their needs to survive. There is no cycle (other than life and death). It’s not circular. It’s a line. Sometimes it’s crooked, but it’s a line and it never comes full circle. The depletion of resources, only to grow and consume the next available resources, all while destroying anything that gets in their way. The chaos of nature is perfect design. It’s something that fascinates me. Few human activities can replicate chaos as design, with the exception maybe of free form art. *Also available in custom limited edition sizes. Santiago brings an interesting set of aesthetics to his work. He has navigated in and out of two cultures throughout his life. Born in Philadelphia and then moving back and forth between the United States and his native country of Colombia, eventually staying in Colombia for the next 14 years. Inspired by his mother, a painter, Surrealist art, Latin American magic realism, music, and the world of cinema, Santiago creates work that looks at the dark and the light in life. "I see the world in a way that even to me is a bit strange, but very real. The world is a strange, complicated, and fascinating place. I’m constantly drawing metaphors of how I see the world and its future. My images are about the relationship between reality and perception." His work has been featured in Surface Magazine, WIRED, Flaunt Magazine, Featherstitch Avenue, Picture Magazine, GRAPHIC Magazine UK, Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta International Airport, Lenscratch.
