ABOUT THE ARTWORK

I love cut out shapes - the bold, graphic, sharp lines made by cutting paper with a scalpel or scissors. My drawings are the result of extensive observations of plants and flowers, both at home and abroad, and I have simplified the forms to create shapes and silhouettes which imply movement when layered and collaged together on simple frameless panels. I have used pre coloured and hand screen printed papers of various thicknesses to create discreet texture and add an additional dimension to this Harlequin artwork. The paper is professionally stuck to aluminium dibond and the panel is unframed for a modern and minimalist feel and so that you can see the detail of the various papers. It has several coats of a specialist acrylic varnish to protect the surface.

Caroline's collages are recognisable for their distinctive and stylised imagery. Her work is informed by the real and the imaginary and her training in textile and architectural glass design is evident in her use of pattern and colour. Her cut out shapes are often inspired by nature and natural forms and she endeavours to create a sense of movement in her compositions by layering and highlighting the negative spaces between the shapes. Drawing is an important part of the process, as is experimentation with colour and form to create vibrant and energetic artworks. Caroline gained recognition for her distinctive architectural glass. She undertook large scale commissions for public and private spaces and meet the Queen with her work in 2011. However it is the hands on, simple and traditional technique of paper cutting and collage which she finds most gratifying, using just a scalpel, paper and adhesive to create contemporary and original images
