This piece was a study of Billy, a friend who was having some troubles. I asked him to put his hand to his face, as he works with his hands. I always work with Sennelier or Old Holland oils, as they are the most pigmented I have found, which ensures the color will last a very long time. All of my paintings are on linen canvas, adding to their perennity. I find this a very strong work. Billy's green eyes are beautiful in contrast to the red overtones, bringing the subject forward towards the viewer. Like all of my portraits, except those that are commissioned, I start with a subject (Billy) and allow it to take me where it will, which ends up looking often like another person. Billy was cool with that. We wonder if the other person exists out there somewhere. Maybe you know him.
