ABOUT THE ARTWORK

The geometry and shape of the Cacti was inspiring to me by the time of conceptualizing the piece. Furthermore, cacti is an iconic and meaningful plant and symbol that represents my roots and where I come from: my country of origin, Mexico. I hope to inspire intrigue, doubt and surprise. Nature is the broad subject matter. The evolution of the natural shape. I chose steel because it's a very noble material, it also allows me to reproduce my ideas at a larger scale. This sculpture is composed of five elements that collectively represent a growing cactus plant, symbolizing a process of change. The presence of the sculpture offers a new environment; it is not an object but rather a place to be, a inhabitable micro landscape. The five elements are arranged and organized as a composite group, with each piece mounted on bases or partially buried in the ground, adapting to the physical and visual characteristics of the surrounding area. The construction technique allows for the serial repetition of each element to create larger forest-like assemblies

I was born in Mexico City, in the neighborhood of San Angel, in 1953. I began my studies in the field of Physics-Mathematics at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). I attended the painting workshop of Maestro Antonio Ramírez at the San Carlos Academy. I also worked as an assistant in my father's workshop, the painter and sculptor Federico Silva. Later on, I worked as a draftsman and model maker at the office of Architect Agustín Hernández, as well as at the Center for Sculptural Space at UNAM.
