ABOUT THE ARTWORK
Inspired by the Tuaregs in North Africa Tuaregs are a large Berber ethnic confederation, who are traditionally a matrilineal society. The Tuareg women own the homes and the animals and families trace lineage through women. The Tuaregs are an Islamic tribe where women embrace sexual freedoms, dictate who gets what in divorce and don't wear the veil because men 'want to see their beautiful faces'. Instead, men wear veils. Interestingly, prenups and divorce are everyday - with parents throwing their recently separated daughters 'divorce parties'! However, similar to the Navajos the Tuaregs are slowly changing, with younger men more influenced by the surrounding patriarchy.
