Ancient Roman legend says that the poppy grew from the tears of Venus, which she shed over the beautiful young man Adonis. And the ancient Greeks claimed that the poppy created the sleep god Hypnos for the goddess Demeter, when she was looking for her rowdy daughter Persephone. Because of its fertility, poppy served as a symbol of fertility, which is why it is an attribute of the goddess of fertility and matrimony Hera (Juno). The temple and statue of Hera on the island of Samos were decorated with poppy heads. Another goddess - the goddess of the harvest of Ceres - was always depicted with a poppy in her hand. Wreaths of poppy flowers and ears of corn were used to decorate her statues. And the goddess herself was often called Mekona (translated from Greek mecon, makon means "poppy").
