This body of work represents a distillation of over 25 years as an illustrator and painter, both as a solo artist and as a commercial artist within the Feature Film Visual Effects industry. Beginning with a deeply held love and fascination for landscape painting but using contemporary painting techniques, my work focuses on a freedom of spirit, a lightness and simplicity of design, touch and execution. Influenced primarily by the great landscape painters - Moran, Bierstadt and Monstead but also offering an homage to other notables such as Turner and Rothko, my work seeks to describe, in a similar fashion, a vastness of sensorial range; a confluence of theme, colour, tone and light. The inter-relationship between these themes expresses itself in many different ways to the casual observer and this is manifest within my work. Predominantly in the abstract, my paintings exhibit a deconstruction of the typical 'landscape' themes. Whimsical perhaps, often forthright, but always expressing a love of representation, my work seeks to emulate the natural surroundings at an impressionistic level. In contrast to my commercial work in the film industry where the 'hyper-real' is exclusive, my personal work seeks to be wholly 'inclusive'; gently inviting the viewer in, imparting a story, and providing the 'terms' by which they can formulate their own experience. Each piece's story is unique and so too are the observer's interpretations. Thus, my pieces do not presume to offer an explanation or, for that matter, an absolute meaning. They offer, instead, a simple observation; for that is all we can ever truly expect to receive from a work of art.
