Worcester artist Sarah Dukes creates sculptures of birds and hares. Starting with chicken-mesh for the body, she builds up the details with a variety of wires (many salvaged and reclaimed), such as rusty garden wire, paper florist twine, and vivid electrical cable, allowing the various thicknesses to become the lines that make up the form. Passionate about protecting our planet from the disastrous impacts of climate change, Sarah recognises the need to increase people’s love with our natural world. Birds are a vital element of nature and are accessible to all, even those who live in the most urban of environments. During lockdown, Sarah began making sculptures of the birds in her garden - with a reel of wire found at the back of the shed, she made armatures of blue tits and blackbirds, sparrows and robins, using the wire to ‘draw’ the three dimensional shapes of these friendly garden visitors.
