I’m fascinated by memory and all of its imperfections. This omnipresent and crucial mental faculty of ours, paradoxically, can frequently become a mechanism of discord and discontent. What effect does the relentless revisiting of past traumas have on one’s life? How accurate are our personal histories if they’re altered by each act of recollection? How does the misapprehension of the past effect one’s present and future? Exploring these puzzling, yet commonplace shortcomings of memory is the subject of my recent work, as I develop a visual language that conveys the uncertain and patchwork nature of remembrance. By focusing on my own experience of reminiscence, I hope to illuminate facets of memory that are personal as well as universal.
