Reflecting on the Possibility of Flight Sculpture

The inspiration for my work comes from reflecting on my heritage and the myriad of historical and cultural factors that influenced the person I am today. I create ceramic sculptures to interpret the internal conflict between internalized social conditioning and the search for my authentic self. I base these interpretations on personal experience and use ceramic Russian folk toys as a reference. The animalistic figure refers to the desire for authenticity not framed by history and culture. I create these culturally grounded objects to paint my own stories on. The repetition of the form relates to tradition, whether the painted surfaces are a contemplation of my personal experience within cultures.
