As a sculptor I enjoy creating artwork that is based on realism and figurativism. I like to explore the possibilities of recreating everyday things we see as well as human life being lived. Sometimes taking everyday objects and exaggerating the look and feel of it in my artwork I attempt to endow. Putting human features on everyday things and giving it a face. When sculpting the human form I sometimes think of the people I see when I’m outside of my studio. At times when riding New York City transportation I gaze at faces and study the way people move. I blend into those hard plastic MTA seats I observe their features, skin textures, marks, scars, facial expressions, reflecting on what makes each person unique. I also think of what kind of story they may have as well as what their lifestyle might be like. I picture the whole anatomy of a person and how the human body is structured from the inside out. Meditating on unknown aspects of strangers I feel this gaze helps me with creating the human form. It allows me to think of the real human body from a realistic perspective and it pushes me to avoid creating my figures from a place of perfection. Working with sculpey and ceramics pushes me to explore the idea of details that endow each person with their humanity. At times it can be frustrating because it's easier to just look at something or someone as a whole. But it's a reminder that details are just as important and gives people objects their own truth and a more realistic look.
