Jen Lewis was born in Flint, Michigan in 1979. She received her B.A. in the History of Art from the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor) in 2001. Lewis works exclusively with menstrual fluid to create bold, transformative macrophotography and video art that confronts social taboos pertaining to the menstruation and the female body. Beauty in Blood is her debut project and is created in collaboration with her husband Rob Lewis. Her work has been displayed in group exhibitions internationally, such as Women at the Contemporary Art Institute of Detroit (Michigan, United States), the Feminist Art Conference at OCAD University (Toronto, Canada), Period Pieces at the Urban Artroom (Gothenburg and Stockholm, Sweden), and The Kinsey Institute Juried Art Show at Indiana University (Indiana, United States). Beauty in Blood video art has been included in three independent documentaries about the menstruating body. Lewis is an active member of the Society for Menstrual Cycle Research with monthly contributions to the re:Cycling blog and is curating a menstrual art exhibit entitled “Widening the Cycle” for the biennial conference in 2015. She lives and works in Denver, Colorado.
