ABOUT THE ARTWORK

'LIGHT IMITATING ART™' series. I am drawn to surrealism; images borne out of dreams and the creative subconscious.  I experiment with altered light sources, as well as camera motion and double exposure. The series is shot in studio, utilizing either smooth or textured surfaces, contributing a further subtle element of mystery.  In this exciting exploration of random abstraction, a figure or a suggestion of a slightly definable object sometimes emerges.  I am often asked: what am I looking at?  … the answer is simply, light.  Limited Edition of 25. 20 x 25 archival pigment print, signed & numbered Certificate of Authenticity $750 USD + shipping 2012 BLACK & WHITE SPIDER AWARDS: Nomination :: Professional - Abstract category Over 9000 photographs from 70+ countries. Judges from Tate Gallery & Bonham's, London and other prestigious gallery curators & photo magazine editors worldwide.

In 1997 I made the transition from executive producer in film to fine art photographer. Since then I have been exploring abstraction, producing painterly work that is more about texture, colour and composition and less about representational subject matter. In the LIGHT IMITATING ART series, I am drawn to surrealism; images borne out of dreams and the creative subconscious. I experiment with altered light sources, as well as camera motion and double exposure. In this exciting exploration of random abstraction, a figure or a suggestion of a slightly definable object sometimes emerges. I am often asked: what am I looking at? … the answer is simply, light. My SURFACES series has emerged through discovery of art in found objects. Splashes of graffiti or poster remnants create opportunities for compositions, which exist for only a brief moment in time before being painted over or scraped away. I have explored ancient walls in Europe and local industrial sites in search of weathered stone or wood, rusted metal and distressed paint, while finding a fascination in documenting man-made materials’ never-ending attempt to return to nature. I employ closely cropped images to remove any contextual reference, with the objective of creating a painterly, abstract image. In my LIGHT, FLORA and COLOR FIELDS series, I play with light and nature, as well as macro lenses and camera motion to distort the subject, creating an abstract painterly effect.
