ABOUT THE ARTWORK

The Series in the Eye of the Beholder combines macro photography of human eyes and flowers. The flower used for this artwork is a Papaver somniferous (Opium poppy) . They eye is the artist’s eye. The artist uses his camera with a macro lens to capture the tiniest details of the eye and the flower which are not visible with the naked eye. The resulting image also reminds us of the need to be connected with nature and our Universe. The shapes and colours of the flower blending with the the incredible detailed patterns od the human iris also reminds us of the Universe (nebulas, supernovas, galaxies, black holes), allowing us to once again reconnect with nature and showing us how micro cosmos and macro cosmos are interconnected. The series is printed on a round format and mounted on aluminium with a 6 mm acrylic glass on top, ready to hang. It is frameless and contemporary way of presenting the work. The glossiness of the perspex enhances the colours of the photographic print underneath and the round shape makes it more unusual.

I am Ernesto, an Italian artist living and working in London. I use x-rays of my body for my work, which I transform with bold colours and often embellish with gold leaf, glitter, spray paint or Swarovski crystals. All my work is very much colourful and shiny. I often use symbols like crowns (including crown of thorns-religious symbols) and jewels that I superimpose to the x-rays, and then hand embellish them adding sparkle. Those symbols tend do identify a certain status or social position. On the other hand the x-rays instead are free from any social connotation, any prejudice or stereotype and often free form gender and ambiguous and eventually the most judgemental free angle from which a person can be looked at. These X-rayed self portraits convey a message of equality and universal values, of inclusion and diversity. I have exhibited nationally in UK and internationally and my work is collected worldwide.
