I'm a French-American singer, writer, filmmaker, and photographer living and working between the UK and the United States. After my stage touring was cancelled in 2020, I picked up a camera to document my seaside town of Ramsgate, Kent through two winter lockdowns. The daily practice culminated in 'Hands, Faces, Ramsgate: The Year Christmas was Cancelled', a vast installation in the industrial port of Ramsgate. I owe my appreciation of the whimsical in street scenes to American photographer Garry Winogrand. My images are sometimes dark, often quirky, and always very human. Through collaborations with contemporary dance choreographers and my own experience of live performance, I developed a sense of the drama of bodies moving through space and light. Trained and working professionally as a documentary filmmaker, I learned the transformative power of images and stories about, for, and with communities. A year ago, I started to make photographs. I don't see how I could stop now. This first project of lockdown street photography in a small English town, now complete, will be followed by a more ambitious UK-wide project on nationalisms.
