He is the recipient of the prestigious Pollock - Krasner Foundation grant (2019), as well as an Emily Harvey Foundation residency award (2015) Venice, Italy, and The Watermill Center residency award (2017). Williams legacy includes a lifetime of teaching, “ I work with the individual student to find their core. I try to bring that out, the sensibility that the student has, not transferring my sensibility to them.” William Stewart is most certainly an abstract expressionistic gestural landscape painter, but categorizing Williams work, in the canon of art history, feels like trapping a hummingbird. William’s paintings read like an open window, light pouring through his confident, lyrical brush strokes. Each stroke with its own personality, hovering, rising and falling like a freshly written cadenza. Oaxaca can be credited with bringing Williams work to life. For the past three years, the land and its people have been Williams inspiration. To inform his work, Bill partakes in the culture around him, stumbling through the grave sites on Dia de Los Muertos, photographing the marigolds and drinking the mezcal, giving liberty, passion and emotional eloquence to his work. The drips and runs finishing off each piece with a fresh and spontaneous energy. “Every time I start I think - I feel that I am painting for the first time. It is unstructured. It’s hard to explain where it is coming from. I’m very open to having a new experience in my work. William is a painter’s painter. Throughout his career in New York, New Mexico, Italy and Greece, William has demonstrated passion and commitment. Although he has shown with the likes of Rudolf Zwirner Gallery in Cologne, Germany, William is fiercely independent, wanting to stay true to the paint and it’s final outcome. What started as a strong and uncompromising commitment to gestural abstraction influenced by natural phenomenon, has grown Into a mature painterly style. His peculiar discipline, all nerve and sheer skill, pushing mastery to its limits. This work is about life, sensuality, faith and the quality of miracles.
