ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Another painting depicting the very sinful fantasies of the devoutly Christian and conservative Suzy Spreadwell. The original is 11.4" h x 14.75" w (29.5h x37.5w cm), on Bainbridge illustration board, in aquarelle, gouache, ink, graphite and chalk. Much flatter color in this after looking at some of the pop art paintings (and JODELLE) by the Dutch artist Guy Peellaert. There is an allegory in it, in that today's conservative Christians think more of Satan than of God and in fact are far more attracted to Satan if you see what sort of president they like now. I'm reminded of a Hindu story about a man who spent his entire life declaring there was no god, even up to and including his last words. When he died he was instantly united with God...because he never stopped thinking about him. Well, they never stop thinking of Satan, so... But another thing occurred to me after I was done with the window and wall in the background, which honestly I didn't give a lot of thought to (the character's room has stars and stripes on the wall and she has a sheet with red stripes): she's flanked by church and state and state only gives her the barest cover. Make of that what you will. I'm the kind of person that puns without meaning to.
