ABOUT THE ARTWORK
This composition continues the practice of repetition and mindfulness central to the construction and aesthetic of the work in this series. For each piece there is first a period of meditation, usually 30 minutes, immediately followed by the execution of the work. For Sunyata diamond sutra) there was the usual 30-minute meditation, after the strips were cut, 1 breath per cut, cut free hand. There were no breaks while creating the piece except to change the blade in the knife. The period of work was 42 minutes. For the creation of this medium large scale work, there was a fairly large amount of mental and physical endurance required to make each cut without error and to finish the work without a break. Future work similar to this piece will see even larger pieces created with different compositions, the idea being to extend the physical and mental endurance required for the practice to achieve a transcendent meditative state. The title is based on one of the Buddha's teachings called The Diamond Sutra.

The quotidian material culture he interacts with becomes the inspiration for his work. Materials like volcanic ash from the active and violent volcano, corn masa, the dough that is used to make tortillas that provides sustenance to an extremely impoverished nation, natural plant dyes, upcycled reused denim fabrics, sustainably farmed wood for my frames, natural twine made from the maguey cactus, concrete and rebar are all material aspects that interest him.
