ABOUT THE ARTWORK

The world seems to be much more open now. However, there are still many stereotypes and prejudices. Those disguised in the name of love and care are the most disgusting and hypocritical. Yet, we can refuse to conform to them and continue to be ourselves. Abstract expressionism. Canvas stretched on wooden frame. Satin varnished. Signed on the front. Certificate of authenticity is included.

Sindy Yeung is a self-taught artist in Hong Kong. She has loved art since childhood but was educated in traditional way and never thought she would be able to create her own art. In 2019, Sindy resigned from her management job to rethink about life. She felt so lost until she picked up the paintbrush again. This time, she does not follow any rules but her inner voice to paint. Instead of depicting an “object”, Sindy aims more to present a vibe and share her worldview. Sindy mainly paints with acrylic on canvas.
The subjects of Sindy’s arts are always something dear to her heart, e.g.: i) her self-searching journey; ii) human-nature relationship; and iii) how she, as an individual, deals with the drastic political and social changes in Hong Kong in recent years. Sindy now focuses on three series:
“My Wonderland” series -- This series transcends abstract and realism and brings fauvism elements. It features a girl going on adventures, sometimes solo and sometimes with her inner child, in the Wonderland. The Wonderland is vibrant and dreamy, yet full of unknowns and sometimes difficult. It is whimsical yet echoing what happens within and around us -- our self-identify and childhood wounds, the city we live in, environmental issues etc. Sindy invites viewers to visit her inner world and share with them how she encounters these issues. At the same time, the viewers may revisit their inner world and inner child too.
“Harmony” series -- It is inspired by Sindy’s artist residency in Finland in 2024. Every day, she took a walk to the lake and passed by some fields. This view speaks to her so much. It is not only the gorgeous nature but also human’s footprints on it: the farmlands, cottages, plants, paths etc. This is a picture of human and nature live in harmony with each other: Human takes from the Nature, but in a sustainable way. Human intervenes, but with care and respect. In the series, Sindy also includes the two icons of her “My Wonderland” series, I.e. the “magical plants” and the girl with Afro hair style. They now appear in a more subtle manner, representing human’s humbleness in front of the nature.
“Emotion” series -- This is a direct and naked expression of our frustration and confusion. Nevertheless, the faith and hope deep inside us are also realized during the process. Therefore, we can re-visit our souls and our relationship with ourselves and the world again.
